What is delirium?
Delirium is acute
Delirium comes on rapidly - over hours or days
Delirium is a change in attention
The mental state of a person with delirium changes - it affects their attention (rather than memory) and makes it difficult to have a conversation, concentrate on a task or control emotions. People with delirium can become hyperactive (aggressive and loud), hypoactive (sleepy and drowsy) or both.
Delirium has an organic cause
Delirium is caused by an organic problem putting the mind under strain. For example infection, constipation, pain can all cause delirium
Most people with delirium recover, but it takes weeks
Delirium can take 3 months to fully resolve. One third of people make a full recovery, one third make a partial recovery, and one third will not recover.
There may be an underlying dementia
People with dementia are more susceptible to developing delirium. If you suspect an underlying dementia you should refer to memory clinic on discharge.
